"In special honor of 250 glorious years of American independence and on the weekend of Rededicate 250 — a national jubilee of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving — Jewish Americans are encouraged to observe a national Sabbath. From sundown on May 15 to nightfall on May 16, friends, families, and communities of all backgrounds may come together in gratitude for our great Nation. This day will recognize the sacred Jewish tradition of setting aside time for rest, reflection, and gratitude to the Almighty. I further call on all Americans to celebrate their faith and freedom throughout this year, during this month, and especially on Shabbat to celebrate our 250th year."

Have a Meaningful Shabbat

Here are some tips for a more meaningful Shabbat

Preparation

Begin your preparations for Shabbat a day or two in advance. This includes cleaning the house, preparing meals, and setting the table. The act of preparation helps to set the tone for the special day ahead.

Candle Lighting

Light the Shabbat candles 18 minutes before sunset. This act ushers in the Shabbat and sets a serene atmosphere in the home. Take a moment to say a blessing and reflect on the week that has passed.

Quality Family Time

Use this day to bond with family members. Engage in meaningful conversations, play games, and share stories from the past week.

Go To Shul

If possible, attend synagogue services. Praying in a community setting can be a spiritually uplifting experience.

Invite Guests

Share traditional Shabbat meals with family and friends. Enjoy a leisurely meal and relish the traditional dishes.

Rest and Rejuvenate

Use this day to rest both physically and mentally. Take a nap, meditate, or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Shabbat.
